Ahhhhh…Aruba! I totally understand why people go back year after year. From relaxing on the world’s most beautiful beaches with white, powdery sand and crystal clear turquoise water to the adventure of the West Coast with it’s rugged terrain and wild, untamed Caribbean Sea. The landscape is like nothing I’ve experienced before, where the desert meets the sea. If you are looking for a family vacation, this may be your place. While traveling is always a priority, money can be tight. I’ll show you where you can scrimp in order to splurge on the family vacation to Aruba!

Getting There

I know this is a given but before even getting to Aruba, you will need to have passports for each traveler. If you already have passports, make sure they don’t expire before traveling. In addition to passports, you will also have to complete an ED card for each traveler within 7 days of traveling. Be sure to be on the official Aruba ED website as there are scams out there. Each ED card (one per traveler) will cost $20 per person. Once you complete the ED card online, you will receive email confirmation for each traveler with a green check mark. I recommend taking a screenshot of the confirmation email with checkmark as you will need to show this proof several times at the airport when disembarking to Aruba. You will fly into Oranjestad, Aruba.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Aruba, it is very easy to catch a taxi to your resort as they are lined up outside of the airport. You will want to have Aruban Florin (Aruba’s currency) on you for the taxi ride and tip. Transportation is where we chose to save some money. Instead of taking a taxi to the resort and booking several tours throughout the week to explore the island, we decided to rent a car and explore on our own. We rented a car at the airport and I would highly recommend dong this. We didn’t reserve a car ahead, as this was more of a spontaneous decision, and it was very easy to do. We paid just over $200 for a 7 day car rental. This enabled us to explore the island without breaking the bank on different tours. Renting a car also allowed us to follow the lead of the kids if someone was hungry or needed a break.

Where to Stay

Family Friendly Resort, Aruba
La Cabana Resort, Aruba
La Cabana Resort, Aruba
Family Friendly Pool Aruba

There are two main areas to stay in Aruba…the Palm Beach area and Eagle Beach Area. Palm Beach is considered the High Rise area. In all honestly, this term “high rise” initially didn’t meld with my vision of a Caribbean beach so we chose to stay in the Eagle Beach area. After exploring both areas, however, they are both incredible. Eagle beach is quieter and is one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Palm Beach area has many shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance from the resorts. Both areas are within a 10-15 minute drive of each other so you are able to easily explore both. If you are looking for the best resorts in Aruba, look no further! Although Aruba offers several all-inclusive resorts, I don’t think you need to do an all-inclusive. Aruba feels very safe to explore and leave the resort grounds. Additionally, the food options were incredible. Explore the island, try different types of food and save money!

  1. La Cabana Beach Resort and Casino

This is where we stayed and absolutely loved it! Located across from Eagle Beach, this resort boasts 3 beautiful pools (a kid’s pool, an adults only pool and the main pool). Activities are planned all day long, and change on a daily basis so you never get bored. From water aerobics, dance lessons by the pool, pool bingo, live bands, happy hour, cookie decorating, crafts by the pool, aloe making…you honestly could spend all week without leaving the resort! There were days where we bounced back and forth from the beach to resort (all walking distance) and the kids didn’t want to leave (nor did we!)! La Cabana Resort & Casino exudes family. I was so impressed by the multi generations of families splashing by the pool. You get the feeling that families come back year after year during the same week as you can hear old friends reunite at the pool. We loved the bike path that stretched along the turquoise sea with water view restaurants all within walking distance. The cactus alongside palm trees is an anomaly that is breathtaking! The gelato shop by the pool and the Cinnabon Bakery in the lobby are the icing on the cake! Plus, the rooms have a kitchen so you can save lots of money by making your own breakfast or lunch.

2. Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino

If you are looking to stay in the heart of Palm Beach, with walking access to the beach, restaurants, shopping and nightlife, this may be the resort for you! With multiple pools, daily activities, and a kids club, you’ll never get bored. Oh, and did I mention you are right on a white, powdery sand beach with palm leaf roofed palapas?

👉 I recommend booking early—this property often sells out in peak season.

3. Hyatt Regency Resort and Casino

If you are looking to stay in the Palm Beach area for walkable dining and nightlife, yet have the quiet tranquil luxury resort experience, the Hyatt Regency Resort and Casino may be for you! Home to “Casa Nona,” a fine dining Italian experience, this resort exudes tranquility and relaxation.

Attractions to Visit

  1. Arashi Beach: This was one of my favorite beaches. Located on the Northwest side of Aruba, this is the last stretch of beach on this side of the island. White sand meets gently rolling waves at Arashi beach, making the perfect setting to body surf for hours. I highly recommend packing snorkeling gear from home (you can buy inexpensive sets for about $25 from Amazon). We saw beautiful, colorful fish snorkeling here!

2. After heading to Arashi Beach, follow the road North for as long as you can travel by car. Just when you think the road has ended, you will get a glimpse of the wild ocean on the eastern side of the island! On your way, stop at the California Light House!

3. Casibari Rock Formations

This adventure was recommended by a local and I’m so glad we explored this area. This free attraction led us through the center of Aruba, where we traveled up a dirt road to the summit. Steps leading up various rock formations, with incredible views of the island led to hours of exploring. It’s windy up here so bring hair ties if you have long hair!

4. Bushiribana Ruins

Located on the Eastern side of the island, cactus and dry desert landscape set against the backdrop of the wild ocean was breathtaking. Explore the ruins, listen to the sounds of waves crashing, and view cliffs into the water. This free attraction is another must!!

5. After checking out the Ruins, head over to The Natural Cave Pool. The Ruins and Cave Pool are all in the same parking area. Bring water shoes as the terrain is sharp and jagged. There is a ladder built into the rock to climb down the rock and an area to jump into a Natural Cave pool, protected by rock set inside the thrashing ocean.

6. Natural Bridge: After visiting the Ruins and Natural Cave, follow the signs and travel the dirt road to the Natural Bridge. The scenery is stunning and a natural work of art for the family to see. This is another free landmark to visit!

7. Eagle Beach: This beach is listed amongst the world’s most beautiful beaches, and I can understand why! White sand, calm waters and palapas on the beach made this an ideal place to read a book, float in the water and watch the sunset. Eagle Beach was directly across from La Cabana Beach Resort, making this the beach we frequented daily. Buy a pool noodle and bring your own snorkeling gear to float along the tranquil water and watch the fish glide by. The kids never tired of this beach!

8. Tres Trapi Beach: This hidden gem is located on the side of the road and would easily be passed by if it didn’t come recommended by a local. Bring your snorkeling gear and a pool noodle as this beach is known for sea turtle sightings. Head over early in the morning for your best chance to spot a sea turtle. Bring water shoes as you will cross jagged terrain and climb down a set of stairs to reach the entrance to the water.

9. Baby Beach: This beach is located in Southern Aruba. We arrived in the late afternoon, around 4 pm to take a quick swim before finding a place for dinner. Let me tell you, what unexpected adventures we had! On the drive to Baby Beach, we saw wild donkey walking along the roadside. Not only were the kids so excited, so was I! Once in the water, we swam out towards the rope that signified the border of the swimming area. The water was on the shallow side (not over the kid’s heads). We brought our own snorkeling gear, and I’ll never forget the excitement as my son squealed, “sea turtle!” We ended up seeing 3 sea turtles in the one trip to baby beach and watched in admiration as they effortlessly swam in the waters around us. A core memory for sure!

10. Take an ATV tour of Arikok National Park

While we didn’t get to rent ATV’s on this trip as we were sticking to a budget, it is on our to do list for next time! Arikok National Park takes up quite a big part of the island, with many areas not assessable by car. Exploring the dirt roads through the desert while hearing the history and culture of the island would round out this trip!

Where to Eat

If you are looking to save money, begin your trip with a stop at Super Food Plaza in the Eagle Beach area. Stock up on groceries, coffee and snacks to save money. We had a kitchenette in our room at La Cabana, which made it easy to eat breakfast and make lunch at the resort. We then ate out for dinner, which saved on money. At the grocery store, I recommend buying the Dutch products as they were much cheaper, and delicious! As Aruba is a Dutch island, be sure to stop at the Stroopwafel counter, where they make made to order Stropwafels right in front of you! If you have never tried one of these delicious treats, they are a waffle style cookie sandwich smothered with gooey caramel inside. These are a perfect treat anytime but try laying a stroopwafel on the rim of a steaming cup of tea or coffee for the ultimate experience! For dinner, we explored different restaurants. The food was delicious and the different types of restaurants appealed to varying palettes. Check out our favorite restaurants for dinner:

  1. Gianni’s Restaurant Aruba: This was everyone’s favorite restaurant. Located in the Palm Beach area, the open air of the restaurant allowed you to feel the breeze, hear the live harp music playing just outside, see the vintage gelato truck just outside of the restaurant and taste homemade pasta that tasted as if you stepped in Italy. Parmesan cheese wheels lined the inside of the restaurant, as seeing families get served directly from the cheese wheel was mouth watering. A water and light show choreographed to music is the perfect way to round off the night (oh, and gelato!).
  2. West Deck: This casual dining on a wooden deck overlooking the calm, turquoise Caribbean Sea is the perfect way to experience local Dutch cuisine. Mama Jo was our waitress and led us through an experience of local cuisine that you would eat “if you walked into grandma’s house” on the island. Casual, cultural, and was a great learning experience for the whole family!
  3. Casa Nona: This fine dining Italian restaurant was our splurge of the week. Located in the luxurious Hyatt resort on Palm Beach, the food melted in your mouth. Chicken Parmesan was a favorite amongst the kids and a creamy bruschetta appetizer rounded off this delicious meal. We chose to eat inside, however the outside patio is more our speed. Palm trees swaying, a fire lighting the center of the patio, and a harp performer rounded out the night!
  4. Terrazza Italiana: This hotel was within walking distance along the sea from La Cabana Resort Eagle Beach. This restaurant, located on the rooftop, was a perfect spot to watch the sunset while eating dinner and listening to live acoustic music. The food was excellent and the vibe, relaxed. The music inspired some families to get up and dance with their children. This was a perfect family restaurant.

What to Pack

In addition to the regular packing items, I would recommend bringing a few non- traditional items:

  1. Snorkeling Gear- You can buy inexpensive snorkeling gear on Amazon and pack it easily in your suitcase. Everyday, at the beach, we all pulled out our snorkeling set. We saw colorful fish, angel fish, sea turtles, coral and saved so much money versus scheduling a snorkeling tour.
  2. Water Shoes: While the Western side of Aruba has calm waters and white, silky sand, the Eastern side is made up of rocky coastlines and volcanic lava formation that are jagged and sharp. Everyone needs a pair of water shoes.
  3. Coral Reef safe sunscreen. You will go through loads of sunscreen as the temperatures are very hot and you’ll find yourself reapplying often. Sunscreen is much more expensive in Aruba so pack more than you think you’ll need (a bottle per person is about what we went through).
  4. Pack a float from Amazon…you will not be disappointed! There is nothing like floating over the soft rolling waves of the Caribbean Sea. I also recommend joining the resorts Facebook page to see if anyone is leaving floats or pool noodles behind that you can pick up at your resort.
  5. If you have long hair, pack hair ties as it was breezy (but beautiful) most days and nights.

Going Home

Seven days may not be enough as we were all sad to say goodbye to Aruba. In meeting families at the resort and hearing that this was their 35th year coming back, I understand why this family destination is a popular one and hope we will be one of those families that goes back year after year. Aruba was the perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, water, sunsets, live music…and gelato! The landscape was like nothing I’ve ever seen before…where palm trees dance next to cactus…where volcanic lava separates land from sea. Aruba is truly incredible and I hope you love it just as much as we did! On your way home, you will go through customs before boarding your plane. The traditional 2 hours arrival time before your flight is not enough here…3-4 hours before departure is recommended. We arrived 4 hours before and it was necessary as the lines weaved in and out of buildings, looping inside and then outside again. Make sure to plan accordingly. But most of all, have the best time ever!!

Play, Eat, Stay: Gatlinburg With Kids

Looking for the best family-friendly spots in Gatlinburg? From cozy places to stay with incredible views, delicious meals to enjoy, and unforgettable adventures, this guide has everything you need to plan a fun-filled trip with your kids in the heart of the Smoky Mountains!

There is something so serene about a mountain vacation…where the morning starts with a steaming cup of coffee overlooking the towering mountains amidst the quiet stillness of the world. A place where your thoughts can be heard (and for a Mom, this alone is worth the trip!) and a moment of peace and reflection. Where the simplicity of nature demands center stage. A vacation where rejuvenation meets adventure that can only be found in nature’s playground. Gatlinburg is the perfect family- friendly adventure, filled with starry skies, river rapids, campfire evenings, ski lifts, mountain coasters and pure Smoky Mountain Magic.

Getting There

As a family of 5 traveling from New England, we chose to drive to save money on airfare. With a total drive time of 13 hours, we split the drive into two days, staying overnight in Roanoke, Virginia. If you are looking to break up the drive a bit more, Hershey Park was the perfect stop. Parking is free to visit Hershey’s Chocolate World as long as your stay is under 3 hours. Ride the chocolate world ride to see how Hershey’s Chocolate is made and get a sweet treat for the remainder of the ride!

To entertain the kids during the drive, I highly recommend purchasing the Road Trip Game. This game cost $5.00 at 5 Below and provided hours of fun…from creating music playlists on Pandora that everyone loved, to coming up with billboards for each person in the car, it provided hours of laughs! The activities below can all be found on Amazon as well!

If you are driving to the Smoky Mountains from the North, venture off on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The views are spectacular and highlight how beautiful the United States is.

View from the Blue Ridge Parkway

As your journey leads you closer to Gatlinburg, the mountains appear like a watercolor painting before your eyes. Pictures really don’t do it justice. Taking US Highway 441 brings you to the base of the mountains where you are embraced on either side. I vividly remember the squeals from the kids as Gatlinburg came into view, “It looks like Epcot” was a sentiment unanimously echoed from the back seat. Gatlinburg is like no other town I have seen before. The quaint mountain town with walkable shops and restaurants, Ripley’s Aquarium, Mirror Mazes, and chairlifts leading to the summit of the mountain. In one sweep of the eyes, it was apparent that Gatlinburg has something for everyone!

Where To Stay

You’ll first want to decide what features are important to you with accommodations. In our situation, we were looking for a cabin so that we could save money on meals by cooking in the cabin. We were also looking for pet-friendly accommodations if we chose to bring our dog. Most important features for our search included a view, an outdoor hot tub, a pool and a space large enough where everyone could sleep soundly without complaining of someone snoring 🤣. I highly recommend using Cabins of the Smoky Mountains (website below).

https://www.cabinsofthesmokymountains.com/

A word of advice, make sure to do your research. There are plenty of beautiful cabins at the base of the mountain, meaning you may not have that panoramic view of the mountains. Make sure, if a view is important to you, you are looking for cabins with the view.

You’ll find cabins in both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. In my personal opinion, Gatlinburg is, hands down, the better location. Don’t get me wrong, you will find yourself in Pigeon Forge for activities. However, Pigeon Forge is more built up and has less of that quaint mountain side village feel.

Adventures To Be Had

So many adventures and not enough time! When arriving at Gatlinburg, be sure to stop at the Welcome Center to get brochures of all of the fun! Decide together as a family what you want to experience so everyone is excited! These were our favorites:

1 Anakeesta- This was amongst everyone’s favorite! Located in the heart of Gatlinburg, right on the strip with all of the shops and restaurants. Board a chairlift (or gondola) to the top of the mountain. When you hop off the chairlift, it’s as if you have been transported to a mountain top village. Flowers, water features and sweeping panoramic views welcome you to the experience. Mountain coasters, tree house adventures, tree top suspension bridges and a mountain top restaurant round out the experience. You could spend hours here, and your ticket provides unlimited trips up and down the mountain for the day. Spend the day and head back up to see the sunset!

2. Dollywood- This theme park was an absolute hit! Learn about the story of Dolly Parton through shows and replicas of her childhood throughout the park. If you like thrill rides, take a left after going through the park’s entrance. If you prefer shows, and rides for littles, take a right after going through the main entrance. Whatever you do, be sure to visit the Grist Mill to get cinnamon bread. I promise you, 1 loaf won’t be enough! Get the icing on the side for dipping!

You can save money on parking by parking off site. If you park at Pigeon Forge Park, it costs $3.00 per person for transportation all day to and from Dollywood. Your transportation will be a trolley, that will drop you off very close to the front entrance. If you park at Dollywood, parking starts at $25.

If you were planning on going to Dollywood, check the schedule prior to booking tickets as park hours and openings vary, depending on the season.

3. Smoky Mountain River Rat Tubing- This was definitely a highlight. With two sections of the river available for tubing, one section offers a family friendly, relaxing tubing experience, while the other section offers intense rapids and adrenaline. Your ticket allows you to ride down the river as many times as you would like for the day, as well as experience both sections of the river, I was affectionately coined the nickname “sandbar” as I kept getting stuck in alcoves, and going MUCH slower than the rest of the family , which the kids thought was absolutely hilarious. Next time, we will try the white water rafting here!

4. Hatfield & McKoy Dinner Theater-You know it’s going to be a fun night when cowbells are encouraged in the audience! Whether you are team Hatfield or Team McKoy, experience a lively theater experience with audience engagement. You will laugh, you will hoot, all while experiencing an all you can eat dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and lots of mouth watering sides! Right next door is the Titanic Museum as well! We didn’t experience the museum but the Titanic replica was impressive, and massive!

5. Cades Cove- you can’t visit the Smoky Mountains without exploring the actual mountains. The Cades Cove loop is perfect if you are looking to explore with kids. The drive to Cades Cove is about an hour each way from Gatlinburg, and you can expect to spend about an hour driving the dirt road loop. Stop and get out to hike to original cabins and learn about the people who lived there. Don’t forget to look for wildlife!

6. The Island at Pigeon Forge- This was reminiscent of a mini Disney Springs, with shops, restaurants, ice cream, rides, arcade, live music, and a water feature set to music. Spent a few hours or half a day here! Restaurants such as Margaritaville or Paula Deen’s restaurant were amongst the favorites!

7. Meander down the strip through Gatlinburg- the eclectic shops, restaurants with live music pouring out the doors and the mixture of kid activities that act as magnets, pulling the family in and out of different experiences- from mirror mazes to mini golf, you can spend a full day exploring downtown and never get bored. Tip: get to downtown before dinner time if you are planning on staying through the later hours. It is tough to find parking if you wait to arrive until the evening.

We ran out of time to do everything we wanted…Hillbilly Mini Golf and the Moonshine Mountain coaster (at night) are our first stops on our next trip!

Where To Eat

If you have a cabin, it allows more flexibility with meals. Stop at Food City on your first day to stock up on grocery essentials. You will want to have your morning cup of coffee taking in the incredible view. We stocked up on snacks, quick breakfast foods, deli meat, etc. This allowed us to save money so we could splurge in other areas. Here are are favorites when eating out:

  1. Crockett’s Breakfast Camp- This is a must! The theming was fantastic…picture Davy Crockett music enveloping the restaurant with the smell of cinnamon buns wafting in the air! Be prepared to wait a bit though…we waited 45 minutes for a table and it was well worth the wait. The griddle cakes, which were about 2 inches thick, were pillowy goodness. The cinnamon buns were a meal in and of itself. I got the Black Bear Camp skillet and apparently didn’t read the fine print because it took 2 trips to bring out the food for that meal 😳. Highly recommend!
  2. Alamo Steakhouse- Off the beaten path, this restaurant was recommended by a tourist we met in the hop on/ hop off trolley system through town. Our best dinner was had here. The homemade fried mozzarella and the Horseradish Parmesan Steak strips were our 2 favorite appetizers. They have a 1 lb burger, which was amazing (couldn’t finish it) and the steak was perfectly cooked. The kids loved the options on the kid’s menu and the rolls with sweet honey butter were also a hit!
  3. Blue Moose- This one was perfect if the kids were hangry and you needed to get food, fast. While the food was not my favorite (I would say it equates to a Buffalo Wild Wings), it was sports themed with games airing in every room. If you, or the kids, want a quick bite to eat, while rejuvenating in front of a game, this could be a good option.
  4. Cliff Top Restaurant at Anakeesta- This choice combines views with food. The views are panoramic, and absolutely majestic. This is a great place to eat when you ride the chairlift to the top of Anakeesta!
  5. Downtown Flavortown- This was an unexpected stop to grab food before our venture home. This is Guy Fieri’s place and has a casual vibe perfect for kids. This is another one where the food was OK (sorry, Guy) but the atmosphere was perfect for kids. This place is not only a restaurant, but also an arcade and bowling alley. What we intended to be a quick stop for food ended up being about a three hour pitstop because the kids are having so much fun. What made it even better is that the kids meals came with a $10 arcade gift card each so the kids could play in the arcade while the food was being prepared. There was also a bowling alley inside!

Gatlinburg is a perfect family vacation destination. Whether you prefer hiking, fishing and outdoor adventure, or the explosion of lights and kid centered activities, Gatlinburg truly has something for everyone! I hope you enjoy your morning cup of coffee overlooking the mountains, and the tree top adventures, as much as we did!

Happy Adventuring!

🩷 Always,

Shannan

Upper to Lower Cape Cod in 3 Days: Beaches, Bites and Coastal Towns

Gray’s Beach, Yarmouth Port

Hydrangeas, lobster rolls, endless days, hot sand, beach grass, rolling dunes, and cotton candy skies…there is nothing like summer in New England. Waking to the sound of crashing waves and falling asleep after a long day in the sun beneath a candied colored sunset is magic…it’s nostalgic, and what childhood memories are made of. I cannot think of a better way to spend the summer than body surfing over the waves, skim boarding, fishing, and immersing yourself in nature’s playground. Where the rocks water’s edge make for the perfect Floor is Lava game, where you feel the excitement watching the fishermen roll in with the day’s catch, where finding the perfect rock to skip and counting “3…4…5!” as your rock bounds up and down off the surface of the bay, and where life slows down and feels simpler. Cape Cod encapsulates all of this, and more. I am excited to share my favorites with you…where to stay, eat and explore in a 3 day Cape Cod family adventure covering upper to lower Cape.

Where to Stay

Sea Crest Beach Resort, North Falmouth

After going over the bridge onto the Cape, Falmouth is one of the first charming towns that welcomes you. I love this location as you can arrive at your resort without muscling through summer traffic. North Falmouth is one of my favorite towns as it is tucked away in a quiet coastal town perfect for families. With tidal pools, calm waters and arguably one of the best main streets on the Cape, the unpretentious, down to earth vibe of this historic town makes you feel like a warm hug.

We have stayed at Sea Crest Beach Resort for several consecutive years and I would highly recommend it. To start, hydrangeas flank the front of this resort giving the quintessential Cape Cod feel before even entering the doors. Directly across from the main entrance, you will find a fire pit flanked by robins egg blue Adirondack chairs. This, the perfect setting to start or end an evening. As you walk in the main doors, you are greeted with a nautical themed welcome and gathering area as you excitedly await your check in and room key.

It’s not until you step outside that your breath will be taken away. With an outdoor pool overlooking your own private beach, a restaurant with panoramic water views, an indoor pool directly next to the outdoor pool for those who need a break from the sun, and an ice cream shop, this is a family’s paradise. I also have to admit that I am somewhat of a sand snob. Pebbly sand, in my opinion, just doesn’t cut it. Sea Crest Beach Resort steps onto white, powdery sand as if you have been transported to the Caribbean.

Day 1 Itinerary

After checking in to the resort, relaxation is key on Day 1. Take a dip in the pool, while taking in the landscape of the rolling water views and meticulously manicured homes aloft the waters edge. Seep your toes into the white powdery sand, throw a frisbee or bump the volleyball with the kids, and cool off with a plunge in the water. You could spend hours being together at this resort.

After a sun kissed day on the beach, head out to Shipwrecked in Falmouth for dinner. This restaurant is perfect for families and has something to eat for all of my picky eaters. The nachos and burgers are fantastic! What’s even better is the view! With panoramic windows overlooking Falmouth Heights Beach, this sets the perfect backdrop to experience dusk rolling into the night sky. What’s even better is, if you have to wait for a table, you can walk or relax on the beach. When traveling on the Cape, we prefer traveling on the winding, scenic roads through coastal towns and beach side villages. This way, you get a laid back, local feel. For this reason, we avoid traveling route 6 as much as possible.

Night sky on the drive back to the resort from Shipwrecked on the backroads

Day 2 Itinerary

Day 2 is chock full but feel free to spread these favorites out if it is too much.

  • Head to the Pickle Jar Kitchen in Falmouth for breakfast. Cozy and quaint vibes emanate from this restaurant with coral colored chairs embracing outdoor dining, or rustic tables flanking windows indoors. From French Toast to eggs, gluten free options to coffee, this restaurant made everyone happy. Oh, and check out the moose themed coffee creamer…it was a favorite for my youngest!
  • Walk down Main Street for the nostalgic Cape Cod feel. Colorful flowers lace through Main Street with historic Cape Cod architecture and delights behind every store front. Grab a coffee to go from the Pickle Jar for your stroll.
  • Once you have walked to the end of Main Street, you will find the best shop for your Cape Cod sweatshirts, “Cape Cod Sweats and Tee’s Outlet Shop.“ The prices are the best around and the staff are so friendly and down to earth. We will be stopping here on every trip!
Main Street, Falmouth
  • Before leaving Main Street, stop into the best French Bakery around…”Maison Villatte”. Located just a few doors down from “Cape Cod Sweats and Tee’s Outlet Store” this gem has your perfect treat to enjoy as you drive to your next destination. We went in for coffee and left with a sleeve of macrons and a tray of tarts! Get some sandwiches to eat for lunch on the go!
  • Drive to the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port. While the grounds are difficult to see from the car, the homes and water views are stunning. If you are looking for a more in depth viewing and history, head over to the JFK Hyannis Museum, where you can walk the Kennedy Legacy Tour (a self guided tour).

  • Next, head over to Grays Beach in Yarmouth Port. This is a gem for families as it has a small playground and picnic area. The seesaw was a favorite as it is a 4 seater (yes, even the adults fit😂). After playing, take a nature walk through the woods and over the wooden bridge crossing the marsh. The path was magical. Next, walk out onto the boardwalk. This boardwalk covers the expanse of salt water marshes. Look for crabs in the shallow waters, listen to the rustle of beach grass and read the names on each plank of wood on the expanse of boardwalk. If you time it right, you can see incredible sunsets from the end of the boardwalk. This peaceful location feels like a hidden gem that only locals know about. This is the place for core memories to be made.
  • Next, head over to Chatham. Here, white picket fences meet salt weathered shingles. It’s not just Main Street that is magical, it’s the meandering roads lining the water with hydrangeas around every corner. Start your journey walking down Main Street as there are 2 shops that are a must for kids. The first is “Ducks in the Window.” Every kid, young and old, will want a rubber duck to commemorate their vacation. The ducks are very reasonably priced are give the kids a perfect reminder of their vacation once tucked back at home.
Duck Store in Chatham
  • The second must see shop in Chatham is “Chatham Candy Manor.” This candy store exudes the charm of an old fashioned candy store, and combines a math lesson all in one as the kids weigh their candy. If you give them a certain weight they can get in candy, this ends up being a fun activity! The kids and adults are happy here! The butter crunch and fudge at the chocolate counter is the best! Take the candy with you to munch on at your next destination!
  • Walk (or drive) over to Chatham Lighthouse. The walk is about 1/2 mile. The Chatham Lighthouse is iconic and is opposite Chatham Lighthouse Beach. This expansive beach is the perfect backdrop for a walk or to relax while you eat your candy! This is the perfect spot to spot a seal as well. Funny story😂… while on the beach, a group of about 7-8 were filming the water. Naturally, I expected they were filming something magical in the water. I looked to where their cameras faced and saw something gliding through the water. Excited, I yelled “a seal!!” This “seal” then adjusted its position looking as though the seal was waving. To which I declared, “it’s waving at us!!!” Quietly, my mom whispered “it’s a seagull.” I’m sure I am now a meme out there…”it’s a seal😂😂😂!” Moral of the story… make sure you know what you are looking at before yelling it out for all to hear, lol!

  • After a fun filled day, head back to Falmouth and eat at Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub. The food is fantastic (the “pie” on the specials menu was out of this world! Like a Sicilian pizza married a Chicago style pizza with a hint of Guinness in the sauce…amazing!), and the mood, lively. Live Irish music, warm and welcoming staff and families lining several tables make this a perfect family experience.
  • Head back to the hotel for a night swim n the pool before turning in for the night

Day 3 Itinerary

Waking to water views at the Sea Crest Beach Resort sets the stage for the perfect day. After taking in the view, head out for breakfast.

  • Head to Captain Baker’s Donuts in West Dennis for a breakfast that your kids will talk about for years to come. First of all, you are greeted by the cutest red building that looks like an old school house meets a red barn. Upon walking inside, you will see a plethora of donut options displayed. You start your experience by designing your perfect donut, whether it is a teenage mutant ninja turtle doughnut, a fluffernutter doughnut, a maple bacon, doughnut, etc. Once you pick out your donut design, you can watch them make the donuts in front of you. This is not only a fun experience for the kids, but I also love all the options that they offer in terms of dye free glaze, dye free sprinkles, and gluten and vegan options. If donuts are not your thing, you can get a mouthwatering, bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and delicious iced coffees. This is a must stop on every visit to the Cape. They also have a very cute outside area with colorful tables to eat your delicious treats on.
Captain Baker’s Donut Shop
  • After eating breakfast, head over to Mayflower Beach in Dennis. Dennis is another one of my favorite towns on the Cape. Starting with the street signs, charm exudes this small, family friendly town. The street signs look like they have been plucked straight off of a seaside picket fence and hand painted with attractions in each direction… ice cream this way, beach that way. Dennis reminds me of a quiet pocket of the Cape untouched by time. The parking lot for Mayflower Beach is small so you’ll have to time your arrival just right. First thing in the morning or in the late afternoon when other beachgoers are packing up are perfect times to visit Mayflower Beach. As you walk over the dunes, you are greeted by white powdery sand and turquoise water. It’s as if you have stepped into the Caribbean without leaving New England. During low tides, the kids can explore the extensive tidal flats, searching for hermit crabs, minnows, and building sand castles. During high tide, the water is warm and calm and perfect for kids to swim and families to relax.
Mayflower Beach
  • After a day at the beach, head to Twin Acres Ice Cream Shoppe in Sandwich,MA. Twin acres is set on park like grounds with flowering trees and bushes and is the perfect place to stretch your legs and run around after having an ice cream. They have a ton of options with flavors that would meet everyone’s liking. From sundaes to milkshakes, sherbet to sorbet everyone will be happy here.
Twin Acres Ice Cream Shoppe
  • After stopping for ice cream, head to the new boardwalk in Sandwich, MA. This boardwalk is about a quarter of a mile long and stretches over marshes and beach grass. For kids, this is an adventure path. Kids can look down to see crabs, they can look up to see egret nests. The boardwalk is flat and perfect for strollers if you have little ones and want to get a view of the beaches as well. This grand Boardwalk leads to another beautiful Bayside beach. The rocks directly across from where the boardwalk releases you onto the beach is a perfect setting for a great floor is lava game!

And just like that three days on Cape Cod come to a close. If Cape Cod is not on your bucket list, it is definitely a place to add. New England charm meets coastal historic beachside towns… a quintessential New England experience. While, the three days are over, the memories that you leave for your family will last forever. They will forever share the stories of hot sandy toes, exploration, adventure, and lots of ice cream for years to come.

🩷 Always,

Shannan

Best Places to Stay in Ireland (Top Hotels & Castles with Booking Options)

Glendalough, Ireland

I have been blessed to travel to Ireland on three separate occasions, all three times with a different experience. The first trip was with my dad. I was studying abroad in Preston, England and was fortunate to have my dad travel with me prior to starting my semester abroad. On this trip, we stayed in Dublin and experienced the beauty of the city. Here, we stayed in a quaint, boutique style hotel.

The second trip to Ireland was with my Mom and Sister. While our home base was Dublin, we booked a tour to Glendalough, Ireland, and the Wicklow Mountains. On this trip, we stayed in the penthouse of a luxury hotel. For this trip, we didn’t have any accommodations booked. We got off the train and went where the road took us. The road, that day, happened to be covered in pouring rain. We walked into a beautiful hotel, to which the woman at the counter looked at us, soaking wet and said, “We only have the penthouse available.” I’ll never forget when my mom said, “We’ll take it!” For me, it’s the spontaneous trips that have the best stories and memories made.

The last trip was with a group of friends. We rented a car (remember they drive on the left side of the road) and drove from Dublin to Galway and then looped down through the south of Ireland. On this trip, we stayed in Youth Hostels. I tell you this as I want you to know, there is no right way or wrong way to travel. Whether in a 5 star hotel, a boutique or a youth hostel…whether traveling by car, or tour, you can have a fantastic experience on any budget. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with…both budget and level of adventure.

Best Places to Visit and Adventure in Ireland: Travel Guide & Must-See Experiences

Affiliate Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. If you book or purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend places and services I genuinely believe add value to your trip.

There is just something about Ireland that brings about a feeling of peace. Let’s start with the people…there is a warmth that emanates from their souls. They seem to have mastered the ability to live in the present, with both an adoration for the simplicity of nature combined with the love of having a bit (or a lot) of fun. In Ireland, you can walk down a rambling, cobblestone street with live music and laughter wafting from a local pub. You can stand on the edge of breathtaking cliffs with the sound of the ocean pummeling below. You can drive down endless country roads lined with stone walls, with the sight of sheep roaming the countryside. From thatched roof cottages to majestic towns by the sea, Ireland encapsulates what life should be all about. I have been fortunate to travel to Ireland several times to experience Castles, Coastlines and the Culture with multi generations of family. The first was through a Father/Daughter trip with my Dad to Dublin. The second trip was with my Mom and Sister, where we explored Dublin and Southern Ireland. The last trip was with Cousins and friends, where we rented a car and drove across the country. I’m now dreaming of taking my kids to experience the warmth and beauty of Ireland. Here, I share with you my favorites so that you can plan the ultimate trip. Whether a family trip, a trip with friends or with grandparents, all can enjoy these magical locations.

These are my favorite places in Ireland (and I know there is still so much more to see!):

1. Meander Grafton Street in Dublin

Whether you are watching the local street performers, grabbing a pint, or shopping in Irish shops, you can spend hours getting lost in the culture. This is my favorite street in all of Dublin, and it’s close to Trinity College and the famous statue of Molly Malone!

2. Visit Dublin Castle, located in the heart of the city!

This is one of the most historic landmarks in Dublin. You can take a guided tour of the castle, where you will get to see the State Apartments, including the Throne Room and the Drawing Room! Don’t forget to save time to wander through the Castle gardens!

3. Visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest Cathedral in Ireland. Walk inside to see the stunning gothic architecture, the stained glass windows and the incredible carvings. You can also attend a service if you would like. Don’t forget to walk through St. Patrick’s park, which is right next to the Cathedral!

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin

4. Walk the grounds of Trinity College, Dublin

Trinity College is one of Ireland’s most prestigious landmarks. The grounds are stunning with cobblestone pathways and a beautiful green. It’s the depiction of picturesque meets rich history. Make sure to check out the Long Room Library. If you have never heard of this library, google it…it’s stunning! The architecture dates back to the early 18th Century! The Long Room Library houses the Book of Kells…this is a must see!!!

Trinity College Dublin

5. Visit Christ’s Church, Dublin

Christ’s Church is the oldest medieval cathedral in the city with origins dating back to 1030! Make sure to visit The Crypt, Strongbow’s Tomb and take the medieval stone bridge to Dublinia, a museum focused on the Vikings!

6. If in Dublin, go to the Temple Bar area!

There is nothing like the sound of live music, laughter, and dancing! Whether in the Temple Bar area or any pub with live music, spend some time laughing, dancing and singing…truly appreciating and living in the moment. And if someone asks you to dance, by all means, say yes!!!!

My Temple Bar pics are dark…here is another great pub!

If you are looking to stay in Dublin, check out these 2 gems!!

Kilkea Hotel Kilkea Castle:

If you want to stay outside of the city of Dublin, with rolling countryside surrounding an Irish Castle, check out this place! Where unpretentious meets Irish charm and hospitality!! Easy access into the City!

If you are looking to stay in the heart of Dublin, this hotel on the iconic O’Connell, nestled between Trinity College and the Temple Bar area is the perfect location!

👉 I recommend booking early—this property often sells out in peak season.

7.Head across the country to Galway (rent a car or take a tour but get there either way!)

The city of Galway is much smaller than Dublin with a quaint feel, street performers, great food and water access. It’s where rugged beauty meets vibrant culture. After exploring the city, head over to the Cliffs of Moher!

The cliffs tower over the wild Atlantic Ocean. If you are lucky, you may even be able to spot a dolphin! Climb O’Brien’s Tower for panoramic views!! Bring layers as it can get quite windy and rains at the drop of a hat!

8. Visit Kilkenny Castle, the gardens, and enjoy this town with great pubs and shops!

10. Visit the Rocks of Cashel

Located in between Cork and Dublin, this incredible site offers panoramic views of the Tipperary Countryside. Stroll the grounds, walk through the 12th century Cathedral and visit the tower.

11. Visit Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains

Relax and reflect in this peaceful location. Visit the monastic sites of Glendalough, go for a hike, bring a picnic, walk the grounds and go deeper into nature in the Wicklow Mountains!

12. Meander down country roads and just see where the road takes you!

The countryside is endless in Ireland! Ramble down stone wall-lined country roads, watch the sunset, be spontaneous, and just see where the road takes you. These unplanned moments are where the best adventures begin!!

13. Mind the Gap

Have you ever heard that saying…”Mind the Gap?” Well, it exists for a reason. Now imagine you are headed onto a train, the platform is wet from the mist in the air. You, with a hiking backpack the size of a small child on your back. You take one step off the platform and onto the train expecting your foot to land firmly on the train, except that’s not what happens. Instead, your foot starts to slide out into a split as if time has gone into slow motion. The other foot, which was on the platform, has nowhere else to go but…in the gap. You are now in a complete split, with your backpack covering your head, like a turtle’s shell. You look down the aisle, and every single passenger is craning their neck to get a peek at the raucous. It turns out, the raucous is yours truly. It’s a good thing I was with supportive family, who was crumpled over in laughter, unable to help as their faces were contorted in fits of laughter. If you learn nothing else from this blog, it should be this…mind the gap! And…HAVE FUN!!!
